The Smart Scan feature in the Parable app uses infrared scanning and computer vision technology to digitally capture 3D measurements of a wound/lesion site.
Smart Scans require an iPad with an attached Structure Sensor hardware component.
When performing photo documentation as part of an assessment in Parable, select the "3D Scan (Automatic Measure)" option to proceed with a Smart Scan.
During a scan, instructions and tips can be accessed in-app by tapping the "?" Help icon on the right side of the screen.

Guide
Position the Wound/Lesion Site
First, the wound/lesion site must be placed within the 'scan cube' 3D overlay that appears on screen.
The size of the scan cube can be adjusted by pinching or expanding the cube using touch controls.
Due to the nature of infrared scanning, you must be approximately 40cm away from the wound in order to scan it.
The Parable app will display blue alerts at the bottom of the screen to guide users through the scan process, such as to indicate when to move closer or farther.
You are within range and ready to scan when you see the surface of the wound fully bathed in the orange-red overlay.
Scan the Wound/Lesion Site
Move the camera around to scan the wound/lesion site from different angles. A white overlay will indicate portions of the wound/lesion site that have been scanned. A wound/lesion site is sufficiently scanned once it is mostly covered with the white overlay. Typically, 1-2 seconds of scanning is sufficient, and the app will instruct you to hold still as needed. When done, press the stop button on the right.
Trace Wound Boundary
The boundary identification step of the Smart Scan process is outlined in the Smart Trace and Manual Trace article. Adjust the wound/lesion site trace as needed to avoid capturing any non-wound tissue within the green outline.
View and Align the Wound/Lesion Site
The Smart Scan should be oriented to match the patient's head-to-toe alignment. Treat the patient's head as the 12 O’clock reference position (and the feet at 6 O’clock), and use touch gestures to align the 12 O’clock position of the wound/lesion site with the patient's head.
Once aligned, submitting the the scan by tapping the arrow on the bottom right and proceed to the clinical assessment.
In-Depth Demonstration
The "Performing Assessments" tutorial video gives an overview of the Smart Scan (3D) process.
Tips
Due to the minimum distance required for 3D scanning, the still image captured during scan (the 'Primary Capture' for the assessment) may lack resolution in some scenarios. You can capture a high quality, close-up images of the wound/lesion site using the Supporting Photos option after scanning.
Troubleshooting
Ensure the hardware is properly set up, attached, calibrated, and/or charged.
If the 3D cube is flickering during a scan, this indicates a potential need for 3D sensor calibration.
